Saiva Kuple, a restorer at the Ģederts Eliass Jelgava History and Art Museum and the director of the Zemgale Restoration Centre, has received the Hungarian state award “Silver Cross of Merit.” She was honored for the restoration of V. Smakauskas’ painting.

This artwork is very significant in Hungarian history. The painting was part of the exhibition at the Courland Provincial Museum in Jelgava until World War II, after which its fate was unknown until it was rediscovered in Jelgava.

The restoration of the painting took 10 years – the painting was in very poor condition, and it is also a large-format work.

Since 2018, the painting has been on display in the museum’s exhibition.
