Since the 20th of June the sand sculpture park on Pasta (Post) island is open, inviting every citizen and visitor of Jelgava to enter the wonderful world of sand art. The traditional Sand sculpture festival leads its 14th year not as a contest but as a large-scale exhibition dedicated to the history of Jelgava, offering 10 works of art, which tell the story of the city spanning 755 years.

Sculptors Kārlis Īle and Maija Puncule have created the demo scultpure of the festival – the Great Coat of Arms of Jelgava, which is over 6 meters tall and also features logo of Jelgava’s 755th anniversary. Other artists in their works chronologically unravel different pages of Jelgava’s history – ancient reindeer hunters, Semigallian settlements on the shore of Lielupe river, Livonian Brothers of the Sword, times of duke Jacob, adventures of Casanova, first hot air balloon flight, motifs of plays by Ādolfs Alunāns, as well as Jelgava sugar factory and well-known band “Brainstorm”.

Sculptures have been complemented by stories of other historical events of Jelgava, which can be read on tablets placed throughout the festival territory. Visitors of Pasta island sculpture park can learn about first museum in Latvia outside of Riga, about visits of king of France in Jelgava palace, about the evolution of Coat of Arms throughout time as well as other significant historical events.

All summer long and until october sculpture park in Pasta (Post) island will await visitors every day from 10 AM till 8 PM, including weekends and holidays. Ticket price – 2 euro for adults, 1 euro for school and university students, seniors and people with disabilities. Children under the age of 7 may enter free of charge. Tickets can be purchased in all “Biļešu paradīze” box offices and online www.bilesuparadize.lv, or by the entrance to sand sculpture park.
