Jelgava Municipal Police officers, Patrol Police Division inspectors Gints Burba and Andrejs Endzenbergs, have returned from Jelgava’s sister city Carmel in the USA. They spent two weeks working alongside Carmel police officers, gaining insight into their daily operations.
Today, participants of the camp “Jelgava – Mītava” – 29 children and young people, along with five accompanying teachers from the sister city Ivano-Frankivsk in Ukraine – met with the city leadership at the Jelgava City Council.
The camp “Jelgava – Mītava” for children and young people from Jelgava’s sister city in Ukraine, Ivano-Frankivsk, is coming to an end. It is organised by the municipality with the support of entrepreneurs, and today, with performances at Jelgava Primary School “Valdeka” Development Centre, the camp participants expressed their gratitude to the entrepreneurs and the Jelgava municipality for the opportunity to enjoy two carefree and peaceful weeks. Another group of children and young people from Ivano-Frankivsk will arrive in Jelgava on Monday.
Continuing the successful cooperation between Jelgava and our sister city Carmel in the USA, this week two Jelgava Municipal Police officers have gone to the state of Indiana for a two-week exchange visit. They arrived in the USA today and will start working with Carmel law enforcement officers from Monday, 15 July – joining joint patrols to get an idea of police work in the USA.
To get acquainted with the city and discuss future cooperation opportunities, the Ambassador of Uzbekistan, Timur Rahmanov, visited Jelgava on an introductory visit on 9 July.
On July 8, the Latvian Olympic Committee confirmed the composition of the Latvian delegation for the XXXIII Summer Olympic Games, which will take place from 26 July to 11 August in Paris, France. The Latvian team also includes three athletes from Jelgava.
To allow the children from Jelgava’s sister city in Ukraine, Ivano-Frankivsk, to relax during the summer holidays, gain positive emotions, and make new friends after a school year spent in wartime conditions, Jelgava municipality, with the support of entrepreneurs, is organizing a camp for them in our city called “Jelgava – Mitava”. This week, the first group, consisting of 29 children and young people, as well as five accompanying teachers, is participating in the camp at Jelgava Primary School “Valdeka” – Development Centre. In two weeks, the second group of camp participants will arrive. Today, the camp participants met with the Chairman of Jelgava City Council, Andris Rāviņš, at the City Council.
The sand sculpture park on Pasta Island continues its work. Those who have not yet had the chance to see the sand art pieces can do so every day from 10 AM to 7 PM. So far, the sand sculpture park has been visited by more than 11,000 visitors.
Staff from Jelgava City Hospital – surgeon Kaspars Vaivods and neonatologist Ilze Punka – have returned from an exchange trip to Jelgava’s sister city, Carmel (IN, USA), where they spent two weeks visiting one of the 16 hospitals in the Indiana University Health network in the state of Indiana, gaining medical experience and getting acquainted with the working environment of a multidisciplinary medical institution.
In an effort to foster friendship and enhance knowledge about Jelgava and Latvia, the Jelgava City Library sent approximately 40 books of various genres, along with CDs and games, to its sister city Carmel in Indiana, USA, this May.
On the 8th and 9th of June, the “Summer Signs 2024” festival will take place on Pasta Island. Visitors will be welcomed by the largest sand sculpture park in the Baltics, where 17 professional sculptors from 10 countries will reveal their interpretations of the theme “World Fairy Tales” through sand art. The festival will also traditionally feature concerts by Latvian musicians and a wide-ranging entertainment programme for families with children.
