The 22nd International Ice Sculpture Festival will take place in Jelgava from 7th to 9th of February with theme “Superheroes”. The venues of the festival are Pasta (Post) Island, Čakste Boulevard and the open-air concert hall “Mītava”. Several restrictions on pedestrian movement as well as traffic organization could be applied during the festival. Visitors are invited to park cars on the side of the River Lielupe, from which they arrive in the city and if possible, avoid using the Lielupe Bridge.
On February 7th to 9th Jelgava City invites to the 22nd International Ice Sculpture festival – the largest gathering of ice superheroes in the Baltics. Ice art, demonstrations of sculpture making, an extensive cultural program and other surprises.
The International Ice Sculpture festival will be held in Jelgava for the 22nd time on February 2nd to 9th 2020. The event has gained recognition and popularity among Latvian and foreign guests and artists, and this year’s contest looks promising already – organized with the subject matter “Superheroes”.
Christmas trade fair will be held on December 1st from 15pm to 18.30pm on the Duke Jacob’s Square, where not only holiday themed goods will be available for townspeople and guests, but visitors will also have the opportunity to witness the lighting up of the main Christmas tree of the city at 17-18:00pm.
From 21st to 27th October both local residents and guests are cordially invited to participate in Jelgava Restaurant week. It will be a chance to savor the season’s best foods from products from local producers. Selection of eight restaurants form Jelgava and Jelgava county open their doors to all gourmands to treat themselves introducing new flavors and gaining new experience.
On 31st of August in Jelgava a number of entertaining, educational and attractive events will take place in different locations throughout the city. Local townspeople as well as city guests can choose to visit their favorite events.
Yesterday (17th July) was presented Latvian youth team, which will participate in the European Youth Olympics in the capital of Azerbaijan Baku. Amongst all the 34 Latvian athletes in the delegation, Jelgava’s athlete Māra Anna Zīverte was also included.
On July 13th the sixth annual nocturnal half-marathon will be held in Jelgava city as a 5th stage of “Bigbank” Run Latvia event. All supporters of active lifestyle, as well as anybody else are welcome to test their strength and durability, by selecting the distance that fit their fitness level and skill!
On September 6th to 8th in the city of Jelgava, the technology and innovation festival called “Mehatrons” will take place, merging the already known and traditional “Engineers Days” and “Festival of Metal”. On 7th of September on the Pasta (Post) Island, visitors of the festival will have the opportunity not only to watch Robotics competition, but also to familiarize themselves with educational institutions, in which engineering can be studied as well as the companies in which engineering knowledge is applied. Meanwhile, from September 6th to 8th fans of speed and twists and thrills in the sports complex “Rullītis” will be able to participate in disciplines such as 5th stage of PRO-KART Championship, agility ride, speed circle, mini dragrace and drift.
Solemnly closed VIII Latvian Youth Olympics that gathered 2800 athletes from 77 major cities and municipalities of Latvia. Athletes from city of Jelgava successfuly participated and won 60 medals – 16 gold, 21 silver and 23 bronz, thereby ranked 3rd in overall medal ranking.
VIII Latvian Youth Olympics will take place from 5th to 7th of July in Jelgava, bringing together around 3000 young athletes who will participate in 29 disciplines. The most athletic municipality in Latvia and the best Latvian athletes in summer Olympic sports will be determined during the Olympics.
A wooden viewing tower with a well-equipped picnic place in Jelgava, Palace Island, was formed in the summer of 2018. It is intended for observation of the wild horses, birds, two rivers and city panorama in the floodland meadows of the river Lielupe, which is a protected nature territory.
