Jelgava History and Art Museum of Ģederts Eliass has renewed its exhibition “Prehistoric and medieval times in Semigallia”, which is now available for visitors. The exhibition spans thousands of years of history – paleolithic age through medieval times. It features objects mostly from the collection of Kurland Provincial Museum and Athenaeum, but several new finds have been added as well.

The renewed exhibition continues its chronological structure, but has gained a new design, which creatively plays with elements of historical reconstruction. Along with a look into Semigallia’s archaeological heritage, visitors can learn about the beginnings of medieval Jelgava.

The exhibition features a new section titled “Clash of civilizations”, which offers a look into the clash of Christian culture with the traditions of local population in medieval times. A whole new element is the ever-changing exposition “Newest archaeological finds in Jelgava and its vicinity”. Both residents of Jelgava and visitors of the city can get acquainted with a fraction of the rich heritage, hidden in the depths of earth. Thanks to the work of historian Andris Tomašūns, new finds continue to be added to the collection.
