The public report of Jelgava City Municipality for the past year has been published. The information gathered in it says that last year the number of employees in the city increased by 3.5 percent and the total number of employees in jelgava increased by 0.3 percent. And despite the decline in economic activities caused by the pandemic, the average wage has increased by 100 euros.

The public report of Jelgava City Municipality for 2021 was approved by the deputies in June during the City Council meeting. It includes basic information about the city’s population, employment, economy and information about the municipality and its capital companies. The task of the public report is to inform the public about the objectives of the local government, the achieved results and the use of budget funds.

 

For Jelgava, 2021 has been a challenging year, it required the municipality to focus as much as possible on an assessment of the progress made so far and to take a significant step forward by making accurate, balanced decisions. According to the Law on Administrative Territories and Populated Areas from July 1, 2021, Jelgava is a state city.

 

Thanks to the active involvement of the municipality and residents, Jelgava during the reform maintained the current administrative territory.

 

According to the data of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, in January 2022 there were 54, 694 inhabitants in Jelgava, but in January 2021 there were 55, 336 inhabitants registered in Jelgava. In 2021, 560 children were registered in the Jelgava Registry Office, a year earlier – 696, 911 people died (in 2020 – 1007).

 

Despite the widespread impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the labour market, the number of workplaces in Jelgava increased in 2021. Data from the State Revenue Service show that in 2021, 24 732 employees worked in the city, compared to 2020, the number of people working in the city has increased by 3.5 percent (826 employees).

 

The largest share of employees in Jelgava was still made up of Jelgava residents – 52 percent of the total number of employees or 12 852 people. Residents of Riga – 8.3 percent – and residents of the surrounding counties had also found work in our city: 21.4 percent from Jelgava county, and 3.5 percent from Dobele county.

 

The total number of employees in Jelgava last year was 33, 522, of which the city employed 38.3 percent or 12, 852 Jelgava residents, but 36.1 percent or 12, 091 inhabitants had found jobs in Riga.

 

The average unemployment rate in Jelgava in 2020 was 4.5 percent (5 percent a year earlier), which was the third lowest among the cities of the republic after Valmiera (3.8 percent) and Riga (4.1 percent). At the end of 2020, there were 1343 unemployed residents of Jelgava registered with the State Employment Agency, which is 326 people less than at the end of 2020 (1669).

 

In recent years, the average monthly wage of employees has increased in Jelgava, in the regions and in the country as a whole. In 2021, in Jelgava, it was 1,190 euros, which is 100 euros more than in 2020.

 

According to Lursoft data, in 2021 there were 4267 economically active enterprises (4162 in 2020). The number of commercial companies and sole proprietors per 1000 inhabitants in Jelgava is increasing every year. In 2021, 258 new companies were registered in Jelgava, but also 277 were liquidated.

 

According to Lursoft data, the largest companies in Jelgava in 2021 were: SIA “Jelgavas pilsētas slimnīca” – 576 employees, VSIA “Slimnīca “Ģintermuiža”” – 557 (2020 data), SIA “AKG Thermotechnik Lettland” – 282 (2020 data), SIA “Jelgavas nekustamā īpašuma pārvalde” – 226, AS “PET Baltija” – 220 (2020 data), SIA “Jelgavas poliklīnika” – 210 (2020 data), SIA “Ceļu būvniecības sabiedrība “IGATE”” – 196, SIA “Jelgavas tipogrāfija” – 177, SIA “KULK” – 157 (2020 data), SIA “Luwo” – 149, SIA “Zemgales veselības centrs” – 135, SIA “Jelgavas autobusu parks” – 101 employees.

 

One of the largest employers in Jelgava is also Latvia university of Life sciences and Technologies, where as of October 1, 2021 there were 985 employees (as of October 1, 2020 – 1129), including 583 of the total staff of LLU, academic staff and guest lecturers.
