Highlights of 2024 in Jelgava

What has the year 2024 been like in Jelgava, what have we experienced, and what have we accomplished? We offer a brief look back at the highlights of this year in our city.

  • The most modern water sports base •

In Pilssala, the most modern water tourism and sports base in Latvia has been built, where the city’s athletes are already training. Simultaneously with the construction of the sports base, Pilssala Street has been completely reconstructed, and the surrounding area has been landscaped – various sports and recreation zones have been created, which are actively used by the residents of Jelgava.

  • Zemgale Industrial Park •

Construction work has begun on one of the most ambitious projects for the upcoming years in the city – the “Development of the Zemgale Industrial Park, Phase I.” As part of this project, sections of Atmodas, Lapskalna, Slokas streets, and Meiju Road are being reconstructed, and new street sections are being created to connect Atmodas Street with the Dobele highway.

  • New stadium •

Since the beginning of the new school year, students and city residents have been able to use the newly reconstructed, modern stadium at Jelgava Centre Primary School.

  • Civil registry office on Pasta street •

This year, the Civil Registry Office of Jelgava City and Municipality moved to a new building on Pasta Street 32. At the moment residents of Jelgava can register important life events in modern and newly renovated spaces.

  • Čiekuru Street •

In a public vote, residents of Jelgava chose the name for the new street near the future kindergarten in the Nameja Street area. The newly constructed street, from 2nd Line to 3rd Line, will be called Čiekuru Street. The infrastructure development in the city block around Nameja Street, 2nd Line, and 3rd Line has been completed.

  • Social services center •

After a major building reconstruction, the multifunctional Social Services Center was opened in February at Zirgu Street 47A. Several divisions of the Jelgava Social Affairs Department continue to operate there, and new social services are also being provided.

  • Rental apartments under construction •

Construction work has started at Ganību Street 54, where SIA “Jelgavas īres nami” is building two low-rent apartment buildings with 116 apartments.

  • 320 children learn without parental contribution •

The Jelgava Municipality will implement a European Social Fund project in the coming years, and starting from September, 320 children will be able to attend five private kindergartens without parental contributions.

  • Miera Street •

The reconstruction of the next section of the bypass continues – in the first phase, Miera Street is being rebuilt from the bridge over the Platone River to Zemeņu Street.

  • 70 percent of the city’s street lighting modernized •

Another city street lighting reconstruction project has been completed. As part of this, the lighting in Raiņa Park and 70 street sections, parks, and squares in Jelgava have been upgraded this year. A total of 1,152 old street lamps have been replaced with new-generation LED lights, equipped with light controllers.

  • Jelgava.lv now offers audio option •

Continuing to improve the functionality of the Jelgava.lv website, its content has become even more accessible to the residents of Jelgava this year. A text-to-speech feature has been added to the website, making it easier for users to listen to the written information.

  • The third Youth Center in the city •

In March, the youth center “Pakāpiens” opened at Loka Maģistrāle 25. It is the third youth center in the city.

  • Exclusive gift •

In celebration of the city’s anniversary, Jelgava received an exclusive gift from its twin city, Rieijmalmezon, France. In gratitude for the 17 years of friendship and successful cooperation in various fields, the city presented Jelgava with a gift – the large gates of the fence surrounding the Jelgava Holy Trinity Church Tower, designed based on historical photographs of the gates.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – Higher quality

At Jelgava City Hospital, SIA “Vizuālā diagnostika” has installed the latest generation magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment, equipped with innovative artificial intelligence algorithms for planning, imaging, reconstruction, and post-processing of MRI exams. The latest technology offers a greater opportunity to detect and address health issues in a timely manner.
